In a rare moment of truth, Madonna covered up in casual attire during a birthday vacation in Cannes, France, in August 2014. From those Chanel fingerless gloves and polka-dot Adidas jacket to her floral-print skirt and loud, wide-brimmed hat, her style -- like her success -- is clearly something that's all her own.
Shock and awe: That pretty much sums up how we feel about Madonna. No one has yet been able to combine talent and ambition with controversy and reinvention in quite the same way she has -- all while managing to keep the world watching well into her fourth decade as a professional performer. In honor of the Material Girl's
56th birthday, we're taking a walk down memory lane and celebrating a life that's often imitated, but never duplicated.
